"Have you played chess before?" Palma asked Savannah, setting up the chessboard on the table.
She, Andy, Carter, and Savannah were about to play four-man chess. A game Andy had designed himself. Bright lights glistened the kitchen, bouncing off of the granite counter. This was Palma’s favorite room in the penthouse. It was crisp and clean with sparkly marbled flooring. The cabinet was chestnut with parsley herbs suspending from it. She inhaled the fresh scent of cinnamon, a scent she’d often smelled when in The Netherlands.
"I don’t know how to." laughed Savannah, pulling up a chair to sit next to her.
"Oh, I can teach you." offered Andy, smiling kindly at her. "It’s fun once you get the hang of it."
After they were finished setting up the game, different colors of chess were strewn on the board. Palma was blue, Andy was cream, Carter was red, and Savannah was purple.
"I go first." applied Palma, moving her pawn forward. "Savannah’s next."
Savannah tried to move a pawn diagonal, but Andy stopped her. "No, you only do that when the opposing piece is next to you."
"Here’s how you play the game," instructed Palma. "All you have to do is protect the king. Protect him. Because if we were to take him away, you’re adios!"
Savannah laughed. "Okay, so I only move the pawn forward?"
"Yep." nodded Carter. "Now with your knight you can form an ‘L’. Like this,"
He moved the knight up two spaces and slid over one space. Savannah giggled as she moved her knight, automatically knocking Andy’s pawn out of the game.
"This is fun!" she cheered. "I used to think this was a nerd’s sport, but this is pretty easy."
Palma smiled at Savannah as Andy made his move. She cared about Savannah. She liked the way Savannah was just like her. They could talk about anything and not feel embarrassed by it.

"I have a present for you." said Palma, handing her a small red box and a wrapped gift.

"No, you shouldn’t have." said Savannah, taking the red box from her hand. "I hope it’s not another diamond necklace."

"Close." she grinned, waiting for Savannah to open her gift.

She slowly lifted up the top and looked inside the box. Savannah cooed as pulled out a crystal bracelet. "Aww…! A bracelet with baby Jesus in it! And it has your initials on the back!"

"That’s for the friendship bracelet you made for me." Palma spoke.

Savannah gave her an affectionate hug. "You’re the best friend I could ever have."

That made Palma feel sad for a moment. Her brain tumor was taking over her and she didn’t know how much time she had. She knew Savannah wanted to pay for her operation with the five hundred dollars she won, but she wouldn’t let her. She didn’t need to give her that much money for a pointless operation.
